The Federal Government recently enacted the Correctional Service Act, 2019 which repealed and replaced the Prisons Act, 2004. The imperative for this reform is hinged on Nigerian Correctional facilities failing to meet up with the globally approved standard for rehabilitation and reformation of inmates. The session on ‘Prison Reforms and National Security’ will discuss prospects for implementing reforms in the Correctional Service as a way of sustaining national security and the quality of life of inmates within the criminal justice system.

A recent research study portray the failing standard of the Nigerian Correctional Services to be represented in the following: poor feeding of inmates, lack of adequate medical care for inmates due to lack of requisite facilities and the lack of recreational and vocational training for inmates [Bridget Edokwe, 2021]. As a result, the primary focus of the Correctional Service Act is providing a legal basis for ensuring suitable conditions for inmates towards reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration. Aside provision of adequate living units and sanitary facilities, there is a shift in focus to ensure inmates are productively engaged through recreational activities and vocational training.

Objectives
•    To aggregate ideas on improving the living conditions of inmates in the Nigerian Correctional Services.
•    To engage high-level stakeholders on implementation of prison reforms
