The NESG in collaboration with the World Bank Country Office in Abuja commissioned the NESG/WB Public Information Centre (PIC) on Monday February 19, 2007 at the NESG Secretariat in Lagos. A major part of the activity was the presentation of the “Doing Business 2007” report by the World Bank to key stakeholders in the nation’s private sector, followed by an interactive session on Nigeria’s position on the Report.

Participants at the PIC launch included representatives of the federal government, business/professional associations, media, civil society, and the World Bank office in Abuja.

Mr Hafez Ghanem, World Bank Country Director who was represented by the Bank’s Lead Economist, Mr Volker Treicher. He noted that the PIC in the NESG Secretariat, Lagos is the third one to be set up by the Bank (the other two PICs are in AREWA House, Kaduna and the World Bank Office, Abuja). According to him, it clearly indicated how passionate the Bank felt about information-sharing based on its knowledge and experiences.

What is the Public Information Center?
The World Bank under its 2002 information disclosure policy began making an enormous amount of operational information available to the public, ranging from project and policy documents to strategy and evaluation documents through PICs all over the world. The World Bank believes that stronger PICs promote a broader public understanding of the Bank’s role in member countries and increased local ownership of programs and projects. In partnership with organizations like the NESG who are committed to research and development, the World Bank opens PICs to demonstrate its commitment to dialogue and transparency in making information access a reality for people world wide.
